It performs at The Hawth, Crawley, on Tuesday, May 10, at 7.30pm.

Spokeswoman Lorraine McGregor said: “Under the baton of conductor Pavel Kogan, who descends from a long line of distinguished musical heritage, the orchestra perform the richly-lyrical Second Symphony by Rachmaninov and Shostakovich’s Festival Overture. John Lill, one of our finest pianists and a firm favourite at The Hawth, will perform Prokofiev’s third and most popular piano concerto. At 6.30pm there will be an entertaining and informative pre-concert talk in the theatre with Jonathan James.

“Lasting 30-40 minutes, the talk will offer insights into Russian musical titans and what makes their music so powerful. The Moscow State Symphony Orchestra has become renowned around the globe under the leadership of Pavel Kogan. In 1989 he was engaged as music director and chief conductor and immediately enriched the orchestra repertoire with the works of European and American musical literature.

“The orchestra’s partnership with Pavel Kogan has earned them an enviable reputation for high standards of artistic excellence, imaginative programming and community engagement.

“The orchestra now play some 100 concerts annually touring regularly overseas to the USA, United Kingdom, Japan, Spain, Austria, Italy, Germany, France, South Korea, Australia, China and Switzerland.”

A landmark of the orchestra has been to present the grandiose monographic cycles of complete symphonic works of the greatest composers.
