Young tennis talent shining at Storrington

The annual event attracted players from clubs across the area, including Billingshurst, Slinfold and Steyning, whose youngsters are all coached by members of Storrington-based Matthews Tennis Coaching.

Although the players battled wind and rain on one day, most of the week-long tournament benefited from glorious sunshine. Only the traditional homemade cakes and refreshments were missing from the popular annual event.

“It was great to see all the courts back in use and the junior players really enjoying their tennis,” said head coach Nigel Matthews.

“We’re lucky enough to have nine courts at Storrington and three different playing surfaces so it’s the perfect setting to host a tournament like this.

“Throughout the six days, 358 matches were played. The matches were competitive but friendly and the players were able to socially distance, tapping racquets at the net rather than shaking hands.

“Major winners included Stuart Li-Tremble who competed in four events and won all four, and Flynn Mitchell, who won three of the four events he entered, including the U12s and U14s singles titles.

“All in all it was a really successful week of tennis and we’re really looking forward to getting back to running a full programme of coaching this September.”
