The Lower Beeding handler was taken to hospital at Redill on Thursday after a horse at his yard kicked out at him, leaving him with a punctured lung and broken ribs.

He was intensive care for a while after fluid on the lung was detected but is now recovering well and is expected to leave hospital soon.

And if he was able to watch the Fontwell Friday-afternoon action from his ward, his pain must have been eased a little by seeing youngest son Joshua ride his 6/1 runner Flute Bowl to victory in the Southern Cranes And Access Ltd / TBA Mares’ Handicap Hurdle.

His other jumps-rider son Jamie gave him a further lift half an hour later, albeit on a different trainer’s horse, winning the Come To The Races With Racing Travel Handicap Chase on 5/2 joint favourite Mr Bachster for Kerry Lee.

Both Joshua and Jamie were able to give race-goers a positive progress report on their father’s recovery, saying he was on the mend and was making light of what had happened at the stables near Horsham.

Elsewhere on a rain-hit afternoon at Fontwell Bon Enfant (5/2), tipped on this website on the morning of racing, took the Winner Rental Services Conditional Jockeys’ Novices’ Hurdle, while the EBF Stallions/TBA Mares’ Beginners’ Chase went to David Bass on Emily Gray, the 5/4 favourite.

Next up at Fontwell, it’s the Southern National Raceday on Sunday, November 15.
