Rare Eriskay pony born in West Sussex

A new Eriskay foal has joined ponies at Fay Cottage Farm, Faygate, where Maxine Harwood specialises in the rare breed.

The colt foal, named Faygate Bailiff was born on October 6, becoming Maxine's eighth homebred foal. He is the first foal for Follgate Bridie, who was previously a pony club pony.

He is by Maxine's stallion, Craigellie Somerled, who is currently running with an Eriskay mare Maxine brought down from North Uist last year.

"Somerled ran as a feral stallion for many years on the islands and he needs companionship," explained Maxine.

She has been breeding Eriskay ponies for many seven years at the farm and has sourced other ponies from the Western Isles for clients. With the new ones she has bred, they are now giving enjoyment to Eriskay pony owners throughout the country, ranging from the Isle of Wight to Lanarkshire.
