'What a man, he did great things for the club' - Tributes pour in for former Crawley Town chairman

Marley has been involved with the club for many years and was chairman for six from 2007 to 2013 and saw the club rise from non-League to League One.

Marley first joined Crawley's board in 1999 when the club were in the Dr Martens League.

When he stood down as chairman, he said. "Working full-time for the Crawley Town cause for the last 14 years has been personally worthwhile."

After stepping down he continued his involvement at the club and was the chairman of the trustees for the Crawley Town Foundation until last year.

And fans and people involved with the club took to social media to pay tribute to Marey.

GH Away Day Travel tweeted: "Our sincere condolences to the family and friends of our former club Chairman Vìc Marley, he was a true friend and gave us a great deal of encouragement- he would always have time for a chat about Crawley Town with any supporter who approached him - he will be sadly missed"

@Matty_crzz said: "RIP Vic Marley. Will always remember him coming over and shaking hands with all the Crawley fans that travelled to Cambridge one year at half time. As a 14 year old at the time I was in awe! What a man, did great things for the club and Sussex FA."

Pat Harper also tweeted: "So sad to hear the news today that Vic Marley has passed away he did so much for football at @crawleytown and later for the Sussex fa my thoughts go out to his family and friends RIP Vic you were a true gentleman."

Fans also commented on the Crawley Town FC Supporters Facebook page. Graham Longley said: "Very sad news, when he was the Chairman he almost always came onto the terrace at away games and greeted the fans present. Crawley Town will miss him. RIP Vic."

Jason Bates said: "Sad news RIP Vic. What a character. He was a charming man, who loved his football."

Kat Marchant posted: "I used to work on the turnstiles and was the only girl. He was always very kind to me. Sending my condolences to his family and friends."

Phil Jarman said: "So so sad. Can’t believe this has not been mentioned by the club .. I worked closely with Vic and he was an asset and figurehead at the club ... lovely fella"

Gareth Flemington said: "A true gent, always made my colleagues and myself from the Sussex FA welcome at the ground. When he stepped down as Chair came onboard with Sussex I had pleasant trips taking him down to Lancing with his amazing story’s and knowledge RIP Vic."

Former Crawley Observer sports editor Graham Carter said: "Very sad news. Vic did a lot for Crawley Town and the foundation. Always a pleasure to deal with when I was at the Crawley Observer.
