The war memorial, for instance. It may have been moved around as the Carfax was redesigned but it continued to be a steadfast presence.

It used to stand opposite the Stout House pub where the buses now stop but, in November 1991, work started to pedestrianise the Carfax and it was moved.

You may remember the Carfax used to contain an underground toilet – well, its entrance was roughly where the war memorial now stands.

The memorial wasn’t the only landmark to be moved.

The bandstand used to be a few yards away from where it is now, while the Victorian drinking fountain now at the southern end of North Street was also close to the memorial.

These pictures were taken from the County Times archives between 1984 and 1992.
