Haywards Heath Harriers team captain Tom Mullen reported: “The weather was particularly bad for the junior races, with driving rain and fog affecting the younger athletes. It brightened up for the senior races although by then the undulating course was fairly muddy.”

This did not stop the Harriers though, and their record turnout across the age groups produced some excellent results in what were highly competitive fields.

Alan Thomas and Margaret Hollamby did the sprint and standard distance duathlon at Chilham Castle on Sunday, when appalling weather slowed times and Hollamby admitted both were wrong to use road running shoes.

In the sprint (5k run/27k bike/2.5k run), Thomas was delighted to claim his first age category with 1hr 48.12.

Hollamby opted for the standard distance event (10k run/40k bike/5k run) and was pleased to finish 3rd lady although at 2hr 51.23 it was her slowest ever duathlon.

She said: “The off road very hilly run route had long stretches of thick mud and it was reflected in slow times.”
