Weald’s squash players are out of luck but close for 1sts on long trip

After their recent run of good squash wins, Weald’s 1st team were edged out 3-2 on their long trip to Cooden.

Despite the top two, Mark Pearson and Joe Mack, being outclassed in three games, the lower orders made a real match of it.

Mark Wheeler led 2-0 before missing out on the crucial points in the next two tie-breaks but eventually kept just in front with some relentless retrieving to win the decider.

Pete Berry led 2-1 but could not maintain the momentum as he was narrowly beaten, while Julian Drage worked himself back into the match after losing the first on the tie-break to force his opponent into errors, eventually winning 3-1.

There was a similar scoreline for the 4ths against Copthorne 5th and again the higher orders suffered 3-0 defeats, although Simon Young was working his way into the match only to lose out on the final tie-break.

The wins, both by 3-2, came from Bill Baxter and Laurie Smith but despite Andrew Barbour’s good length shots keeping him in the match, he missed out in five.

The depleted 3rds lost to Lewes 2nds as the only win came from Stephen Chinn, who produced a focussed match to triumph 3-0. Laurie Smith missed out in five but there were 3-0 defeats for Sarah Naish, Bob Brimfield and Ben Nelson.
