LUKE VINTER crashed 30 runs from just 14 balls to ensure Worthing clinched a tight two-wicket win over St.James Montefiore on Saturday.

In what proved to be a tense tussle between the two sides, Vinter’s late runs helped his side to their fifth league win.

After being asked to bowl first, St.James reached a formidable score of 221-7 declared from 52.5 overs.

Worthing found themselves in some difficulty in reply and were 116-4 and 158 for five at one stage.

But Sam Jones hit 44 and Vinter made a quickfire 30 to guide his side home.

St.James chose to bat first but found it tough going in the early stages of their innings and slipped to 39 for two.

However, Henry Sims (23) and Adam Davies shared a third-wicket stand of 54 to get their side back on track.

Davies was the mainstay of the innings and his knock of 72 ensured St.James posted a total over 200.

Jack Foreman chipped in with 32 from 29 balls down the order as Montefiore reached 221-7 declared from 52.5 overs.

The wickets were shared around between Worthing’s bowlers.

John Glover, Martyn Swift and Andy Lutwyche all took two, while Nick Ballamy took just one wicket.

Worthing’s chase did not start in the way in which they would have wanted as Josh Wood went for eight.

Matthew Green (20) and Jones put on 55 for the second-wicket to get Worthing’s innings back on track.

Jones fell six short of his half-century when he would have been hoping to kick on.

A number of Worthing’s batters made contributions, with Ballamy hitting 35 and Ben Challen making 28.

Jake Cross then made 23 but the home side were in a spot of bother at 184-8.

At that stage, they still needed 38 to clinch victory.

But that sparked Vinter into life and the number ten produced a match-winning knock.

He hit 30 off 14 balls, which included two sixes and a four, as Worthing reached 222 for eight in 46.2 overs. to claim a two-wicket win.
