Crawley table tennis ace Kate Cheer competed against the best young players in England at the Junior Masters tournament in Harlow.
The 14-year-old was up against 11 other top-ranked English girls, with competitors meeting each other once in a round-robin format.
Ifield Community College pupil Cheer was seeded nine but punched above her weight to finish in fourth place.
She won seven of her 11 matches, only losing to the top four seeds. The event was won by national junior champion Maria Tsaptsinos.
Cheer said: “It went quite well for me. I’ve improved lots even in the last week because I’ve been practising and playing with better players.
“At the Cadet Masters last year I was the second seed, so I was expected to win lots of matches. But here I’m ninth, so I wasn’t expected to do so well and that helped me.”
