WORTHING Raiders Rugby Club made it back-to-backs in National 2 South with a 27-23 victory at home to high-flying Taunton Titans this afternoon.
Gary Kingdom’s penalty gave Taunton a second minute lead, before Raiders moved 5-3 ahead on 15 minutes when Sam Aspland-Robinson burst through to touch down but Matt McLean was off target with the conversion.
Raiders had captain Scott Barlow and Dan Sargent sinbinned either side of Taunton’s Freddie Fraser touching down. However, despite being two men down, Raiders levelled through a McLean penalty on 26 minutes.
Taunton went back ahead again just two minutes later when Jake Woolmore went over and Kingdom added the extras.
Another McLean penalty made the score 15-11 at half-time, before he kicked two more at the start of the second half to move Worthing 17-15 ahead when Taunton had a player in the sinbin.
A Kingdom drop goal moved Taunton ahead in a back-and-forth game, before Worthing retook the lead with a fantastic try 15 minutes from time.
Replacements Rob Smith and George Montgomery were both involved as they fed the ball to Owain Davies, who found Aspland-Robinson and the pacy Harlequins loanee sprinted through to touch down in the corner.
McLean nailed a brilliant conversion from the touchline to move Raiders 24-18 ahead.
Worthing went further ahead on 69 minutes when another long McLean penalty had just enough on it to go over.
Taunton set up a nervy finale when they drove forward from a line-out with five minutes to go and Daniel Frost touched down. Kingdom’s conversion hit a post as the score remained 27-23.
Raiders kept possession of the ball for the time remaining as they inflicted just a third league defeat of the season on Taunton.
