Kin Ryu Judo Club is celebrating following success at the British Judo National Championships.

The British Championships are open to all British players and is to determine the British Judo squad for 2014/2015.

The competition is the toughest event of the calendar and this year 7 Kin Ryu athletes were up to the challenge of taking on the best in Britain. In the Cadets (14-17yr olds) 16yr olds Ertug Vanli and Andrew Woods were fighting in their first British Championships and it was to be a tough challenge with over 30 competitors in their groups. Both fought well against strong opposition but were unable to progress to the final rounds. In the Cadet girls 16yr old Kirstyn Chase had put herself in a great position going into the championships ranked 3rd in Great Britain. She fought well but a mistake in her first fight was difficult to come back from and despite winning her next 2 fights, she finished just outside the medals in 9th place.

In the pre-cadets (12-13yr olds) Corlia Robertson, William Burke, Adam Funnell and Zack Wake were all raring to go. Corlia fought well and was winning her last contest but with a minute to go she was caught by her opponent and was unlucky not to medal on this occasion. Following her were Adam and William who were both in the same weight group. Both took early wins to get to the final stages but finished outside the medal with William finishing in 7th and Adam in 5th. The final competitor was Zack who having watched the others was determined to break into the medals. He showed he was on top form and cruised through the early rounds winning all fights with spectacular throws and holds to gain a place in the final. After a tough final contest, Zack was narrowly beaten so took a well earned Silver medal and has been offered a place in the England squad.

Junior Coach Richard Williams said “The standard of the judo from the competitors this year at the Nationals has been fantastic and to see them all achieving at such a high level is testament to the hard work and dedication they put into their training. Congratulations to all!!”
