Crawley Boxing Club’s James Verbeeten (30) fell just short of winning the Southern Counties Developmental Welterweight title in Rye.

Up against Hampshire/Surrey champion Chris Spacagna of Golden Ring, Southampton.

The bout started with both boxers staying in punching range mixing head and body shots. James was landing with good blows but was allowing Spacagna the last word in the exchanges.

The second was better for James but Spacagna kept a slight edge.

In the last round James knew it was close and was aware that he was behind so got to work, pushing Spacagna back with good combinations.

James won the round clearly with a strong finish, probably wishing the round was a minute longer but ultimately it wasn’t enough to win the bout.

Though disappointed, James can take heart in three great performances in three successive weeks which bodes well for the rest of the season.
