On a bright clear winter’s day and despite the awful ground conditions a great many Haywards Heath Golf Club members turned out to play golf in tribute to George Chandler on his 90th birthday.
The club had arranged a fun competition to be followed by coffee and cakes in the afternoon to recognise George’s contribution to the club over his many years has a member.
A shotgun start at 9:00am began the team competition with George, Club Captain Mark Gerken, and his wife Julie with Mark Bawden completing George’s team.
George’s team managed a credible 70 pts to come third. Second were Tony Jones, Tony Henocq, David Shore and Graham Abbott with 72 pts
The winning team consisting of Martin and Margaret Jones, Mike Abbot and Brian McCully managed an outstanding 81pts.
George’s thank you speech to the club was quite an emotional one and it was no surprise that at times he was lost for words. In all is was a great day for all who took part, and a reminder to everyone that no matter how old you are good friends and good company are priceless.
