Horsham left aggrieved with late disallowed goal

Horsham were left feeling aggrieved at a disallowed late goal which cost them the points against league leaders London Edwardians.

An inexplicable umpiring decision saw Freddie Campbell sin-binned after putting the ball past the visitor’s keeper, costing them points in what was otherwise a tremendous game of hockey.

The home side would have taken the lead at that late stage, but to compound their misery after having to goal disallowed the visitors then hit a late winner.

Unbeaten Edwardians had clearly improved since Horsham twice beat them last season.

The hosts lost skipper Duncan Howarth just before the game when he aggravated an old injury, necessitating a somewhat modified line-up. However both teams went hard at it from the whistle and looked evenly matched.

In games like these defensive errors decide score lines and, seconds before half-time, the visitors exploited a crack in the Horsham line to go a goal up. However, from the restart, Horsham looked the better team, the midfield line of Rob Turnbull, Campbell and Noah Chinn pulling the strings.

Home keeper Andrew Isaacs was strong in defence and a clearance kick from him, via a pin-point pass from Chinn, started a passing move that saw Jack Dean one-on-one with the visitors’ goalie. Dean doesn’t miss chances like this and duly obliged.

Campbell then danced round two defenders to slot home, only for the umpire to bring the game back, show him a yellow card and take away all the hard-earned momentum.

To add insult to injury a last minute defensive error on the edge of the D let Edwardians net a second time.

Horsham manager Al Campbell said: “I went to ask the umpire about the decision after the game but he refused to speak to me.

“However I asked the umpires’ assessor, who was present, about the incident and he confirmed it should never have been blown.”
