It's celebration time for Chichester golf ladies

The club championship was won by Kathy Donohoe with Caroline Hawkes runner-up and the senior club championship by Caroline Hawkes with Jennifer Sherwood second.

The lady captain presented a comprehensive report of a successful year for the club with the divisional teams all doing well and representatives reaching major rounds in national competitions.

She thanked her committee and members for their support and announced a donation of £2,059.27 had been presented to her chosen charity, the Friends of Chichester Harbour.

She welcomed the in-coming captain Fiona Walsh, who outlined her vision for the coming year ending her speech on a musical note.

The new lady captain’s drive-in took place on bright and frosty morning. A large group of ladies turned out to watch Pauline Beale putt out on the 18th as outgoing captain, then move to the first tee to see Fiona Walsh drive off.

Club selection remained a secret until the chosen envelope was opened and luckily it was her driver. After the drive, 44 ladies took part in a fun competition entitled a reverse Walshtz.

In the clubhouse players were treated to mulled wine and mince pies before the presentation of prizes.

Results: 1 Marilyn Forward, Keeley Poole; 2 Caroline Hawkes, Yvonne Leaver, Sue Winterbotham; 3 Yvonne Dunckley, Jeannie Blackman, Maria Mills.

Fiona thanked everyone for their good wishes and said £387 had been raised for her chosen charity, The Cinnamon Trust.

COWDRAY PARK

At the start of play in Cowdray seniors’ Stableford, John Hall was top of the Eclectic Trophy leaderboard by one point from nine other players, most of whom had already scored a par or birdie on every hole. But this competition has always had the ability to come up with an unexpected result.

This year proved no exception as Hall was unable to improve his Eclectic score, along with nine of the top 11.

Harvey Terry had a good round of 36 and improved his Eclectic on both the seventh and 11th for an end score of 56 to gain top spot.

This was enough to hold the late surge of Gordon Kendall at bay as he improved his total to 56.5, alongside John Doran who, despite a disappointing round, still improved his Eclectic on the fifth hole for third place.

The tussle for the Carter Trophy saw challenges through the day.

Mel Milburn had a clear lead and only needed to garner some points from his final round to claim the title. But he didn’t and he had a nervous wait for the final result, which was prolonged by the late finish of John Newman.

He finished joint top in division one for 15 points in the Carter Trophy to send him within one point of Milburn, eventually declared the winner for 2016.

As if playing with only two clubs and a putter was not difficult enough, playing in cold, wet and windy weather only added to the problems for Cowdray Park seniors when they competed for the Elliott Cup.

Some players came in with scores most would be pleased to achieve when they had a full set of clubs.

The key to success seemed to lie in the ability to avoid bunkers, and two players who did this most successfully were Rob Doney and William Hunter, each of whom recorded 36 points, with Doney taking the title on countback.

Third with 34 was John Hall.

BOGNOR

The competition season always finishes with a number of fun competitions for the ladies section at Bognor.

With the weather still agreeable, a pairs Texas scramble was held. This format requires each pair to decide which player’s drive is best, then both players play their ball from that position.

This format does slow down play so good conditions are required to ensure a pleasant round.
