Golf: Bognor ladies issue the big invite

Windy conditions caused havoc on the beautifully-manicured course, but good scores were achieved.

Winners were Anne Bushell and Lynn Miller with guests Gill Maynard and Jane Price from Willingdon Golf Club, who received their prizes from ladies’ captain Lyn Watson and her vice-captain Berit Smallcorn.

Bognor seniors entertained Rowlands Castle and captain Jim Catt led the way with an emphatic 6&5 win with partner Frank Hodder.

Bognor went on to win 6-2. The return is in early July.

Bognor seniors won 6-2 when they entertained Petersfield on a sunny day.

Most games were very close and the outcome was unclear until the final hole or two. Bognor’s win reflected a determined display.

There were compliments from visitors and home-team members on the excellent condition of the course.

Bognor men’s Birchwood team secured a place in the next round following a 3-2 win at home to Royal Eastbourne. They will go to Singing Hills in the second round of the Plate competition.

Results: Simon Watts & Micky Garrigan won 2&1, Ian Parkes & Chris Lovell won 6&4, Steve Reddick & Ian Paine won 3&2, Roger Leverton & Andy Isitt lost 1 down, Ian Hendry & Mark Watson lost 4&3.

The Cyril Blake team lost at home against Littlehampton. It was 2-2 following the four matches but in the play-off, Littlehampton’s par on the first was just enough to secure the win for them.

Andy Brown made it through to the last 16 in the Sussex Amateur Championship at West Sussex GC – it was a great achievement to make it that far. Henry Leo led after the morning round with a one-under-par 67 but missed qualifying for the last 16 on countback.

Bognor’s Bert Reid Trophy and plate competitions were keenly contested. The Bert Reid is a medal competition over 36 holes, with prizes for best scratch and nett rounds.

This year’s scratch winner was Andrew Field with gross scores of 73 and 69 (total 142). Andy Brown came second with 146 and Nathan Parke was third with 147.

Field also won the Bert Reid Plate with nett scores of 69 and 65 (134). Grant Twine came second with 136 and Nathan Parke third with 137.

Neil Slater fwon the William Hardwicke Cup with 43 points. Cameron Lang came second with 39, Norman Lee third with 38.

Bognor’s Evening League team played at Worthing in a howling wind, making scoring very difficult. They came away with a 2½-2½ draw.

Maclean and Beresford were playing a one and a five handicapper and were five down at the turn. They turned it round to be one up standing on 18 only to half their match.

Other results: John Cable & Richard Perry lost 3&1, Ron Stevens & Simon Watts won 4&2, Rob Comins & Steve Reddick won 2up, Phil Hawkes & Rob Redmond lost 5&4.

COWDRAY PARK

Cowdray Park seniors travelled to play a return match against Mannings Heath, who they beat recently at Cowdray Park 5½ -2½.

They returned with an honourable 4-4 draw against a very strong home side.

This was Cowdray’s first draw in 15 matches played this season.

Match manager Ian Heustice and partner Roger Poat started strongly, sharing birdies in the first two holes, but their hosts came back strongly and won 4&3.

The match went to and fro with Cowdray levelling through John Doran and David Wickham, whotriumphed 5&4, before the home side regained the lead. Match four ended all square with John Newman and Barry Overington securing the half by winning the 18th hole.

The in-form pairing of seniors’ vice-captain Derek Smith and Mike Holden followed up their previous week’s win against Farnham with a 4&3 win against strong opponents to level the scores.

The final three matches provided a win and a half for each side to leave the result all square.

George Crouch and Mike Hughes had a good 3&2 win against a pair which included former Cowdray member Adam Gramston.

In the final match, Eric Bounton and Dave Fowler held their nerve to secure the half to force the draw.

Betchworth Park made the long to journey to Cowdray Park to face a home side who had claimed a 5-3 victory at their Surrey course in April. Cowdray duly completed the double with a 6½-1½ victory.

Match manager John Newman teamed up with Ian Heustice to get the side off to a fine start with a 3&1 win.

In-form Derek Smith and Dave Fowler completed a comfortable 4&3 win, then Mike Hughes and Roger Poat made it 3-0 to Cowdray with a 3&2 win before the visitors recorded their only win of the day.

Having competed in a triathlon the previous day, Nick Austin still had enough energy to partner Peter Hallt to the day’s biggest win, 8&6, against a pair who included a five-handicapper.

After a half from Bill Hummerston and David Wickham, the scoring was completed by wins for Graham Evans and Gary Strowbridge (two up) and Barry Overington and John Smith (one up).

Cowdray seniors won 5½-2½ entertained Bognor in the return fixture – Bognor having won 4½-3½ at their Downview Road HQ in April.

Bognor’s players like to test their skills on the undulating downland course, which is in complete contrast to their flat but tricky course.

The match started well for the hosts when match manager Tony Castley and John Doran beat Ron Stevens and Allan Delves 5&3.

Nick Austin and Richard Histed won 2&1 before the visitors recorded their first win. John Durrell and Colin Tebbutt had a terrific tussle with the well-matched Bognor pair of Hugh Diaper and John Woodhead before finishing all square.

Dave Gaff and Ken Marjoram put the hosts back on track with a 4&3 win. Brian Brockhurst and Mick Folkes won 3&2, while Mike Hughes and Trevor Edwards won the last two holes to claim a one-up win.

Judging by the banter and laughter in the clubhouse afterwards, all players seemed to enjoy themselves with the result seemingly immaterial to an enjoyable day.

Cowdray ladies enjoyed dry but windy conditions for the Wakeham Trophy and Cowdray Cup, played over two days in medal format.

The Wakeham Trophy winner was Mandy Lucking, who played some superb golf over the two days with a combined nett score of 142 earning her a handicap reduction from 16 to 14.

Runner-up was Lina Cullen on 150 and third was Sue Brown, also on 150.

The Cowdray Cup is for the best gross score over the two days. The winner with a score of 174 was Tessa Stockwell. Mandy Lucking missed out on count back. Sue Brown came third with 176.

A separate medal was played on the Tuesday, won by Joy Reineck with nett 77.

LITTLEHAMPTON

Littlehampton Golf Club junior member Joe Sykes, 11, will represent Great Britian and Northern Ireland in the Junior World Golf Championship to be played at the Pinehurst Golf Club, North Carolina, USA in July.

The pupil of Rustington County Primary School has a handicap of 14 and has been playing golf since the age of two and a member of Littlehampton Golf club since he was five.

His father Chris, a club member with a handicap of two, came through the clubs junior ranks.

Joe qualified when he won his age group in the Wee Wonders golf final at St Andrews last year and has gone on to represent Sussex under-13s.

A field of 84 players took part in the annual mixed open event at Littlehampton Golf Club on a day of bright sunshine which produced some good scoring.

The winning pair was Mark Ostrom and Mandy Yerbury, members of Rowlands Castle GC.

They won a close-fought fou-ball better-ball competition on countback with 44 Stableford points after tying with two other pairings.

The day also saw a rare event of two holes in one – Don Peacock from Slinfold Park aced the third and Anita Reed, from nearby Ham Manor, followed suit on the sixth.

It’s been a busy time for the Littlehampton seniors, with four matches being played.

Three home matches were all won, versus West Sussex (4½-3½), Hindhead (5-3) and Petersfield (4½-1½). The away match at Cowdray Park brought a 6-2 loss.

A greensomes Stableford was won by J Inwood and A Coombes with 44 points, ahead of J Edwardes and G Roberston with 43.

The Centenary Trophy, a medal competition, was won by P Harris with a nett 61. Second was M Miller with 64 and third P Lickorish 66.

The Norman Hudson Charity Trophy, a Stableford, was won with 39 points by C Hewitt ahead of J Carman on 37, on countback from B Lambert.
