Departing skipper Luke leads Mannings to county cup success

Twelve months after reaching the semi-finals, Bennett and his teammates were in determined mood when they faced Hassocks Golf Club in the final at Lewes Golf Club on Saturday October 20.

Heavy rain and strong winds greeted the two teams on the day but Mannings Heath made light of the conditions to ease to a convincing 3-1 success.

Elliot Webster and George Atkinson gave the West Sussex club a flying start with a 4&3 victory in the first match before two-handicapper Bennett, playing alongside Sam Huddlestone, added a second point after defeating their opponents on the final hole.

Hassocks fought bravely but Mannings Heath’s juniors were not to be denied, victory confirmed by Jack Holmwood and Saul Dolby’s win in the penultimate tie before the final game involving Jamie Dart and Ali Crunden was abandoned at the 16th hole with the match all square, the result given to Hassocks with the rain continuing to pour down.

Bennett has been succeeded in his role as captain by Crunden, with Webster stepping up to become the junior team’s new vice-captain.

“This was the perfect send-off for his two years in charge as captain and he has created a high standard for Ali and Elliot to follow.”
