GOLF-Copthorne seeks sixth outright win in Davies and Tate

COPTHORNE, seeking a sixth outright win in the final of the Davies and Tate Trophy, meet Crowborough Beacon at East Sussex National in the semi-finals on August 11.

Success at Little Horsted would give Copthorne a record number of victories in the Sussex Matchplay championship. Crowborough have won the title once, in 1981.

Copthorne's last victory was two years ago and last year they lost to Worthing in the final at Littlehampton.

The two clubs have dominated the major knockout competition in the county for well over a decade.

In the other semi-final, also on August 11, a close contest is expected between Haywards Heath, winners in 2003, and Willingdon. at Copthorne.

The Eastbourne club were champions in 1980 and 1984 and since then they and Haywards Heath have developed strong teams combining youth and experience.
