Whitty looking to step down as Mile Oak manager

Whittington is in his 14th season as manager but feels things need to be freshened up. He will take charge of the next three games – away to Selsey and Midhurst and then the local derby at home to Southwick on December 28 – but hopes someone will then be in place to take over.

Oak lost 3-1 away to Seaford on Saturday and Whittington was frustrated with the defeat as a number of players were unavailable.

He said: “We were pretty dreadful in both halves but had a number of players missing again.

“There were a lot of excuses and it’s been a struggle to get first-team players available on a Saturday.

“We seem to be missing something at the moment and things are going backwards, so it needs to be freshened up.

“I’ve said I’ll continue until the end of the year and the aim is for the Southwick game to be my last. Hopefully, we’ll find someone to take over, even if it’s just until the end of the season.

“If not, I’ll carry on until the end of the season. I do a lot behind the scenes, so will still help out with some things but at the moment I’m running the team, washing the kit, putting the nets up and doing the programme and I need to funnel some of it out.”
