Worthing United Football Club boss Nigel Geary felt his side’s performance was better than the scoreline suggests after a 5-1 defeat at Pagham on Tuesday evening.

Geary saw his side gift Pagham a couple of goals and said: “The performance was a lot better than the result shows but we just conceded such cheap goals again.

“It’s the story of how things are going for us at the moment. Until we stop giving way sloppy goals, we’re going to be right up against it.

“We didn’t have much luck either – their second goal was going wide until it took a deflection and went in.”

Pagham led 2-0 at half-time with goals from Ruben French and George Bingham. Kieron Pamment and Liam Humphreys, with two, made it 5-0 before Callum Wells got a late goal back.

Mavericks entertain Littlehampton in the Peter Bentley Cup on Saturday (3pm). United will hold a minute’s applause and wreaths will be laid before the game, to mark the anniversary of the Shoreham Airshow crash, when United players Jacob Schilt and Matt Grimstone both died.

Then, at Lyons Way on Monday, Worthing United are holding a two-minute applause and one-minute silence to mark the one-year anniversary of the crash. The applause and silence will commence at 1.22pm. Anyone who wishes to participate is asked to meet at the ground at 1pm.

WORTHING UNITED: rigwell; Punter, Gregory, Stideford, Hasan, Gilmour, Rose, Hards, Gritt, Goldson, Fenelon. Subs: McKerhan (Goldson 50), Wells (Gritt 60), Davidson (Hards 75).
