QPR knock Chichester Ladies out of the FA Cup

The game, twice been postponed because of a waterlogged pitch, was preceded by a minute’s silence in memory of Joe Sharpe, the University of Chichester student and a City ladies’ coach, who died recently.

Not having played for a month, Chichester might have been forgiven for starting the game slowly – but they came out of the blocks well.

Chichester seized the early initiative, twice getting strikers one on one in the opening minutes, but a combination of strong defending and good goalkeeping thwarted the danger.

The deadlock was broken when Lucie Challen made a powerful run down the Chichester left only to be taken down inside the box by the visiting right-back.

Amy Found stepped up to take the penalty and gave Chichester a deserved lead.

The home side began to drop deeper, which allowed QPR to see more of the ball in the Chichester half.

Sally-Anne Thompson made some saves but the equaliser came shortly before the break when a defensive mix-up allowed a corner to fly directly in.

The second half started with neither team able to create clear-cut chances. The visitors took the lead from a penalty awarded for a handball inside the box.

Shortly after that, QPR added a third when a scramble inside the box from a corner ended in the ball being poked in.

Chichester didn’t lie down and a quick break saw Tammy Waine deliver a ball across the front of the box and a visiting defender put the ball into her own net with Kally Ambler lurking.

Chichester began to press and restrict QPR to long balls, but it was one of these that got QPR their fourth. A ball forward caught Laura Ingram and Emma Alexandre out and allowed Wilson to race clear and finish.

Yet again back came Chichester. Waine was fouled inside the box and Found converted another penalty to make it 4-3.

Chichester threw everything at QPR to get the equaliser but it wouldn’t come.

City ladies return to league action this Sunday away to Shanklin (2pm).
