Bridges cruelly suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Merstham through yet another last minute goal.

It’s the fourth time it’s happened to Bridges already this season, but Bridges could have already been out of the game if Merstham had turned their first half superiority into goals.

Felix Oggah-Andres broke clear but delayed his shot with only three minutes gone, and it was hardly a surprise when Tommy Hutchings cut a shot across from the left beyond Martin Grant into the far corner of the net.

Grant then had to hold onto another effort from Hutchings, whilst Taurean Roberts’ pace was causing the home defence all sorts of problems. But the half ended with Lee Carney having a corner just cleared and Elliott Romain seeing a snap shot fizz just wide.

Veteran Clinton Moore forced Merstham keeper Brennan Daly to make good saves as Bridges began the second half stronger, and three times Romain tested Daly with solid drives.

But Bridges were always susceptible to the break and they were twice grateful for brilliant blocks as Nigel Brake denied Oggah-Andres and the excellent Williams Peauroux kept out Sam Tucknott’s effort.

Grant also made a great tip over from Dean Gunner, but Bridges were plugging away relentlessly and they gained their reward after 72 minutes when Abu Touray was brought down in the box and Peauroux’s penalty went in off the post.

Grant denied both Oggah-Andres and Aaron Rhule as Merstham again relied on swift counter attacks, but the hard working Marcus Elliott should have done better with a header from Carney’s free-kick as Bridges looked more and more likely to snatch a winner that had looked beyond them in the earlier parts of the game.

But, after all the brave blocks that had been successful, the final minute of normal time brought a goalmouth scramble where Grant, Brake and Charlie Leach all seemed to have cleared before it was somehow nudged over the line by Roberts, who looked surprised himself!
