Liam Benson put Robins ahead on 17 minutes but Mike Williamson levelled a minute later. Tom Caplin struck on the half-hour to hand Lancing a 2-1 half-time lead.

Back came Hassocks and James Westlake levelled 20 minutes after the break, before the visitors’ Michael Death was dismissed for violent conduct.

Lewis Finney then curled in a fine free kick 16 minutes from time to put Lancing ahead. George Fenton’s penalty, after a foul on Elliott Bennett, then made it 4-2.

Robins captain Ashley Marsh, making his 499th appearance, was then shown a second yellow card, before Philip Gault grabbed a late consolation.
