Brighton will set a new club record of 17 league games unbeaten if they avoid defeat at home to MK Dons tomorrow but Kayal said: “We want to win games and are thinking how to win games, we’re not thinking about breaking records or things like that because, at the end of the day, we want to stay at the top of the league.

“From the beginning of the season, we did well, we worked hard like a team. We know it is going to be a long season, you’re not going to be top of the league from the beginning until the end but we want to fight from now to the end of the season to be there.

“It’s going to be hard but we are ready to do that. We’ve got the same points as the team top of the league now, so I think we are in a good position and we need to continue to do the work week in, week out.”

Kayal joined Albion in January and the club struggled in the Championship last season but Kayal said: “Last season, the club was struggling a little bit and not in the same position as at the moment.

“I was at a Celtic team wanting to win trophies and that was a great experience for me but I’m happy to be here now.

“I want to bring my experience from the last five, six years to this club and try to help my mates to challenge to be top of the league.”
