Reds' aspirations of being a family club were also important to him as he is a family man himself.

Speaking at his first press conference since taking charge, the former Liverpool and Leeds United star said: "First and foremost, having numerous meetings with Selim, and the way that he talked about the club and their ambitions and what this club means to not only him, but to the people who work for the club and the community.

"I am a big believer in family, I have a big family myself, and to be able to come to a club that has the same ambition but has that family feel as well was important to me, especially as my first job, so for me that was important.

"I am very ambitious and after speaking to people at Crawley, their ambitions are high and I like high ambitions so at the end of the day it was a no-brainer for me."
