Geary eyes 30 points as quickly as possible

WORTHING United Football Club boss Nigel Geary has set his side the target of reaching 30 points as quickly as possible to give the youngsters at the club more first-team football.

Geary has been impressed with the recent performances of 18-year-olds Kieran Deacon, Aaron Tugnutt and Craig Nagle, along with 20-year-old keeper Fraser Trigwell.

Former United youth team striker Alfie Gritt has also returned to the club from fellow Southern Combination League Premier Division club East Preston and Geary said: “Our target at the moment is to get to 30 points as quick as we can.

“My target is to stay up and, with the season we’ve had and after being newly promoted, that would be a good season.

“If we can get to 30 points with ten games, or five games to go, it will give us the chance to give more of the youth team their chance and for us to look to next year and build something – a bit like Lancing have done.

“Lancing had been around the bottom for three or four seasons but went on a winning run at the end of last season and have carried that on and that’s how we’ll be looking to finish this season.

“We want to keep the likes of Kieran, Aaron, Craig and Fraser here and build something.

“Worthing United has had players like Dave Herbert and Barney Boutwood here in the youth team in the past and they’ve left to play their county football elsewhere. They are the type of player who you want to keep and build something with.”

Geary is delighted so sign Gritt, who had scored eight goals for East Preston this season, and said: “He’s a good player and scored against us earlier in the season.

“It gives Sam Blundell a bit more help up top and gives everyone a boost. At training last week, you could see that a couple of the players were really impressed that he’s here.

“He’ll bolster our attacking options and it will help keep everyone on their toes. We signed a couple of new players around this stage last season and it helped to rejuvenate us at the time and we finished the season strongly. Hopefully, that can happen again this season.”

United’s last two matches have been postponed – at Littlehampton on Saturday and at home to Hailsham on Tuesday.

The Mavericks are due to host Wick & Barnham on Saturday and then entertain leaders Eastbourne Town in the league on Tuesday.

Geary said: “The postponements have been frustrating and we’re now preparing to have two games a week for the rest of the season. We’re out of all the cups, though, so will have enough time to play all the games.”
