In-form Mullets pick up another victory

A dominant showing from Mullets saw them net four times without reply as they won for the fifth time in six unbeaten league matches.

The game was one of just four in the Southern Combination League to go ahead, after heavy rain at the end of last week caused a number of postponements.

Arundel took the lead after just seven minutes. Dave Herbert received the ball with his back to goal and teed up the on-rushing Asa Nicholson, who fired a low shot home.

It was so nearly two on 18 minutes but Luke Richards saw his header from Nicholson’s corner cleared off the line by Andy Brown.

Arundel then had keeper James Fernandes to thank for keeping the score at 1-0 with 24 minutes on the clock. Dan Simmonds got away down the right before crossing for Johan Van Driel but his effort from three yards was clawed away by Fernandes.

The danger was not over there and Mullets’ stopper got up well to keep out Neil Murfin’s strike on the rebound.

That save proved crucial as Arundel went two goals ahead six minutes later. Nicholson’s delivery from a corner continued to cause problems and Herbert glanced home a header.

Arundel then once again made the home side pay for a miss and Nathan Da Costa pounced on indecision in the Pagham backline to fire past Jamie Binfield and make it 3-0 on 32 minutes.

Fernandes then pulled off a fine fingertip stop to keep out Ryan Cox’s long-range strike to ensure it was 3-0 at half-time.

It took Arundel just eight minutes of the second half to all but secure their win. Herbert led a Mullets breakaway before slotting in Richards, who made it 4-0.

Fernandes, who was in inspired form, was unbeatable and he produced another fine stop to keep out Simmonds’ bullet header as Arundel recorded a comprehensive win.
