Wycombe 2 Crawley 0: Reds suffer bank holiday defeat

Crawley suffered a 2-0 defeat at Wycombe as early and late goals sealed their fate.

The match started seven minutes late due to Crawley arriving late due to traffic delays on the M25.

And Reds’ truncated warm-up may have proved costly as Wycombe took the lead through Max Kretzschmar in the seventh minute.

Wycombe made it 2-0 in the 90th minute through a headed goal by their man of the match Sam Wood.

Reds made two changes to the side which beat Stevenage with matchwinner Roarie Deacon starting in place of Matt Harrold and Lee Barnard preferred to Shamir Fenelon.

The Chairboys made four changes with Kretzschmar and Aaron Amadi-Holloway starting up front, Steve McGinn coming into central midfield and Sido Jombati playing at left back.

Crawley had an early chance when Simon Walton’s corner set-up Sonny Bradley at the far post but the Reds skipper headed over the bar.

Wycombe took the lead in only the seventh minute when Sonny Bradley miscued a headed clearance and the ball fell to Kretzschmar who beat Callum Preston from 12 yards.

It was fairly even stuff for the the middle of the half as Crawley attacked down the wings but neither side created chances.

Wycombe nearly increased their lead two minutes before half-time when Sam Wood chipped over Preston but Jon Ashton was on-hand to clear off the goalline.

At the start of the second half Preston caught Amadi-Holloway’s glancing header.

Reds then created a couple of half chances of their own but with nothing finding the target.

Preston caught a glancing header to deny Amadi-Hollway.

Crawley brought on Matt Harrold in place of Bradley as Deacon switched to left midfield and Mitch Hancox dropped to left back.

Wycombe changed both their strikers for the last 20 minutes with Garry Thompson and ex-Crawley player Paul Hayes coming on.

Crawley survived a late onslaught as Wycombe pressed for a second goal as Preston intercepted a dangerous cross by Luke O’Nien after an initial cross had been cleared.

Hancox then hacked clear from Thompson who was lurking to strike after Pierre beat Preston to the ball in the air.

Wycombe went close with a minute to go when Sam Wood had a go from short-range but the ball bobbled and it rolled wide.

However Wood made no mistake seconds later when he headed in the home side’s second goal at the back post from a cross by Thompson.
