Reds boss Barker second favourite for Sheffield United job

Nigel Clough remains the clear favourite to land the vacant Sheffield United manager’s job, though SkyBet have listed Crawley boss Richie Barker as the next likely replacement for David Weir.

Clough, sacked as Derby County boss at the end of last month, is out in front at 1/10, with Barker 8/1 and then Russell Slade at 10/1, with Dean Saunders, Roy Keane and Sven Goran Eriksson all 16/1. Reports this morning have suggested that legendary former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has applied for the job.

The Blades are expected to open talks with the names on their shortlist this week and want their new man in place for the home game against Port Vale this weekend.

Sheffield-born Barker has strong ties to the city, having started his playing career at neighbouring Sheffield Wednesday and then going on to coach in the youth ranks at Sheffield United when he hung up his boots before taking over at Bury.

Weir paid the price for a wretched run of results which left the Blades bottom of League One after failing to win a league match since the opening day.

The former Scotland defender was dismissed just only four months into his first managerial job having failed to impress United’s wealthy Saudi co-owner Prince Abdullah.

Coach Chris Morgan was in charge of Sunday’s match against Coventry which they lost 3-2.
