Colbran: ‘No confusion over Jamie Brotherton signing for Horsham’

Hornets boss Simon Colbran insists Jamie Brotherton has joined his side from near-neighbours Worthing.

The official Horsham FC website announced the signing of forward Brotherton on Sunday, although Rebels manager Lee Brace then reportedly told our sister paper the Worthing Herald the player had not yet decided on his future.

But on Thursday Colbran said: “I’ve spoken to Jamie today and as far as he’s concerned he’s with next season so there’s no real confusion.

“He said he’s spoken to the Worthing manager and told him he’s joining us.

“I don’t think he (Brace) was very happy about it but to be honest that’s not my concern.

“I’ve got a lot of time for Worthing from when I was manager there but every manager speaks to players they want to sign and Jamie isn’t under contract so we can do that.

“He’s a player I’ve worked with before and have always rated, I’ve tried to sign him every year.”

On Thursday defender Matt Simpson became the latest of last season’s squad to commit himself to the club next season.

This week also saw the surprise return of Ian Varley, who left towards the end of the last season to join Chatham Town, but was quoted on the official Horsham website as calling that a “big mistake”.

It means there will be fierce competition for the two centre back positions with Gary Charman, Glenn Woodburn, Charlie Farmer and Jahmahl King also committing themselves for next season.
