Hot on the heels of announcing the swoop for defender Joe Hancott from Portsmouth, the Rocks have revealed the identity of their new groundsman – in the shape of James Askew.

Askew replaces the outgoing Brian Quinnell and just like left-back Hancott, he arrives with Fratton Park experience. For the incoming turf tender was previously assistant groundsman at Pompey and also has had considerable previous experience at Sussex County Cricket Club amongst others.

And he said: "I'm really looking forward to the challenge of keeping the pitch in tip-top shape and helping to provide a surface that suits the Rocks and the way they like to play their passing game."

General manager Simon Cook explained: "James has volunteered to take over our groundsman's role and we couldn't be more pleased to welcome him to the club. He has recently been appointed full-time senior groundsman at the prestigious Arundel Castle Cricket Ground and we are delighted that James has come forward to look after the pitch at Nyewood Lane in addition to his role at Arundel Castle.

“We're really grateful for all of Brian Quinnell's efforts and wish him all the very best.”

The announcement comes a day after volunteers spent a day tidying up Nyewood Lane with an eye on continuing the upgrade of the ground ahead of the new season.

Organiser Dave Robinson said: “We want to thank those who came along and did a great job. We may mot have had any football of late to get our teeth into, but we have certainly been busy off the pitch.” ends
