George Dowell, the club’s majority shareholder, will take over as Rebels’ chairman and Harry Shiel and Calvin Buckland will become directors of the club. They will join current director Ian Hart and Dowell on the board.

Rebels released a statement earlier this week, which read: “The constitution of the club’s board of directors is undergoing a refresh.

“Deborah McKail is stepping down as chairman and director, John Whyte relinquishes the role of head of finance and Alistair McKail will hand over company secretary responsibilities.

“These out-going officers have made great efforts to stabilise the club, and have made sure the transfer to majority shareholder George Dowell has been as smooth as possible.

“Recognising his over half a century commitment to Worthing FC, Morty Hollis, who is also standing down as a director, is being given the role of life president and will have more ambassadorial duties, rather than being on the board.

“George Dowell will take over as chairman and new additions to the board will be ratified after the process of FA clearance is completed.

“This new arrangement will give George the flexibility to continue his investment into the club.”

Dowell said: “I would like to thank everyone who is stepping down, especially Morty, for all their hard work, in getting us to where we are now.

“We are also assessing additional candidates with a view to more directors joining in the near future.”

The 3G surface started to go down at the club over the weekend and Rebels anticipate the work will be completed by the end of the month.

Worthing’s first game on the new surface will be at home to League Two Northampton on July 7 and Dowell said: “It’s good to get a professional club to come down and open the new pitch.

“It will be a good game and good for the players to test themselves against professionals.

“I can’t wait for the 3G to all be down now and it’s good to see everything coming to fruition. I just can’t wait until the season gets started now.”

New Rebels joint boss Gary Elphick has had a busy first week in charge and is already looking to add to the squad.

Worthing are hopeful of signing striker Tony Nwachukwu, from Horsham, and he has been offered a contract, as has midfielder Brannon O’Neill for the upcoming season.

Rebels begin pre-season training on Tuesday and Elphick said: “We’re starting pre-season quite early as we want to be ready for the Northampton game.

“They’re bringing a strong side down and it will be a fantastic opportunity for our younger players to showcase their ability. However, we’ve got to remember that it’s only a friendly and all that matters is the first league game on August 8.”
