Raiders ran in 32 unanswered points to secure their place in National 2 South next season with a 32-20 victory and Dawson said: “Due to a bit of bad luck, we were staring down the barrel early on at 13-0 down.

“They scored from a penalty straight away and then from the restart, we dropped a box kick and they scored again.

“We actually played pretty well for the first 20 minutes but just couldn’t get over the whitewash. We were held up a couple of times but we knew they couldn’t keep their level up for the whole 80 minutes.

“From around 30 minutes, they started to run out of gas and you could see the swing in the game.

Rob Smith, Liam Perkins and Kiba Richards all started to get over the gain line and at half-time (20-12 down), we felt composed and calm.

“There was a good feeling in the dressing room and we felt it was all ahout racking up the points in the second half and that’s what happened.

“We defended really well in the second half but their points in the first half came from our mistakes and were opportunistic tries.

“We dominated the game up front and scored some nice tries.”

Raiders finish their season at home to Clifton on Saturday and Dawson said: “A realistic goal is we could now finish eighth if we win, which is bizarre when you consider we’ve been poor.”
