Michael Yardy appointed Sussex's Under-17 Head Coach for 2016

Sussex Cricket are delighted to announce that Michael Yardy has accepted the position of Under-17 Head Coach for the 2016 season.

Former Sussex captain Yardy, who retired from professional cricket at the end of last season after spending two decades with the club, will oversee four ECB One-Day Cup matches, and four ECB three-day Championship matches with the Under-17 side.

He will also coach within the Sussex Academy programme, as well as mentoring a number of the Academy’s players throughout the year.

Yardy is currently completing his second year of a Sports Psychology degree at Chichester University, and will also develop his coaching skills at Hurstpierpoint College, looking after their first XI and talented young players.

Sussex’s new Director of Cricket Keith Greenfield said, “I’ve been looking to get Yards into our coaching structure as soon as it became clear he was going to retire from playing.

“This is absolutely fantastic news for our elite young players and our development pathway. He represents everything that is good within Sussex Cricket and his experiences and expertise in all formats is invaluable.

“This is an important part of our cricket strategy moving forward, as we look to maximise the expertise in all fields we have within the county.”

Yardy said of his new role, “I’m very excited to work with an exciting crop of young players, and will look to help them in whatever way I can to fulfil their potential and go on to be future stars of Sussex Cricket.”

Sussex Under-17’s begin their ECB One-Day Cup matches at the Blackstone Academy Ground against Middlesex on Monday 2nd May (11am).

The three-day Championship gets underway when Sussex take on Kent at Polo Farm in Canterbury from July 5th.
