Cricket: They have it Ald to do after losing start

Aldwick CC did not get the start they wanted in their opening Invitation League division two fixture at home against St Andrews as they lost by seven wickets on the opening day of the league season.

Batting first, Aldwick were looking rough around the edges as they stumbled to 122 all out in the 48th over.

Opener Alex Cooper (3) fell almost straight away to J Davies (2-30). Next out was Josh Sargeant (15) who was the first of Daniel Nichols’ four wickets (4-31).

At the other end, last week’s batting hero Adam Rutter suddenly had a lot resting on his shoulders to guide his side to a defendable total. Unfortunately, those heroics were not to be repeated as Nick Elkins (1-12) bowled Rutter (10) and the home side were on the ropes at 55 for five.

A middle-order rescue act was urgently required and this was duly fulfilled by the experienced pair of Grant Wilson (35) and Paul Gibbs (15) who took the total to 104 for six.

But the lower order did not offer any further resistance as Aldwick were quickly skittled out for a below-par total.

Opening bowlers Ollie Smith (1-46) and Adam Robinson (1-42) worked hard and tried every trick to make early inroads without much luck. Alex Ellis’ unbeaten 69 was a match-winning innings and his opening partnership of 61 with Nick Elkins (23) was an essential foundation for his team’s eventual victory in only the 19th over.

Scott Lonsdale (17) waded in with a good knock until he was outdone by John Young (1-18).

Aldwick managed only three points from the game.

Aldwick seconds took ten points from a cancelled game against St Andrews II.

This week Aldwick aim to get back to winning ways away to Brighton & Hove III and the twos hope to make a start at home to Partridge Green.
