Despite the early loss of Tom Woolnough, captain Ryan Maskell and Joe Ashmore batted imperiously, scoring quickly all round the ground and targeting the short straight boundaries.

It took an error from Maskell, dragging on to Nick Smith for 71, to slow the rate slightly. However, Ashmore (77) rebuilt with Taylor Jaycocks and Josh Seward (34*), to take Bognor to a par 228-4 after 40 overs.

Pagham began slowly in response, Ben Woolnough bowling economically in the powerplay and picking up the wicket of Jack Stannard, caught by Jaycocks for 32. After Theo Beynon-Ayres chipped to Mike Harris, Pagham accelerated, with Nick Smith (36) and Ryan Barratt striking the ball cleanly.

However, the introduction of Ashmore accounted for both, with Harris (2-33) getting rid of Wayne Green and Aiden Drake in quick succession as well. Further wickets to Ashmore cleaned up the tail, and despite three massive sixes from Pete Cotterill (27), Pagham finished short on 177 all out, Bognor winning by 51 runs and staying top.

WWCC’s youthful bowlers undertook their duties with great determination, although Chichester’s batsmen demonstrated how to chase a score effectively.

They needed three from the final over but Carl Tupper, former club captain, took the remaining two wickets for one run in the final over with a ball to spare.

It was a great match-up played in the right spirit. Credit must go to Chichester for a great performance.
