Boys lead the Blue Star medal rush

The team travelled to the impressive indoor facility at Lee Valley, Enfield, for this year’s competition, which sees all track events run as relays with the field competition based on Sportshall type events.

In the under-13 boys continuous relay run over 1,500m, where each of the five teams members have to run three legs of 100m, the Blue Star team of Jonah Harewood, Dan Allam, Seb Ellis, Dom Easton and Jordan Levey qualified for the final with the fastest time.

In the final the team were contesting the lead when Seb had the baton knocked out of his hand and although he quickly recovered the team found themselves at the back of the field.

However, with all the team showing great determination and with Jordan Levey sprinting superbly the team overtook the whole of the field to win with some ease in 3m 38.5s.

In the under-13 girls equivalent relay, the team of Freya Millis, Ellie Walker, Molly Ardanowski, Charlotte Lionel and Maddy Strickland also performed with great determination to take the silver medals in 3m 44.6s.

The under-13 relays races run over three legs of two and half laps per athlete saw the girls team of Ella Sharpe, Mia Frost and Maddy Strickland take second place in 4m 46s and the boys team of Jonah Harewood, Josh Barnett and Dan Allam finish in third place in 4m 29.7s.

In the under-11 girls continuous relay, where each athlete runs four legs of 50 metres, the team of Ruby Walker, Eliza Johnston, Katie Turnbull, Maddie Matthews and Ella Hannyngton all ran well to gain yet another silver medal for the club in 2m 47.1s.

The field events also produced a glut of medals, with a win for Jordan Levey in the under-13 boys shot as he threw an impressive 9.54m.

In the girls equivalent Ellie Walker threw 7.61m to take second place, but then went on to win the gold medal with a tremendous performance in the weight for height event, where she threw the 4kg medicine ball over a height of five metres.

In the Under-13 boys weight for height event, Harry Bryant and Dom Easton tied for the silver medal, both throwing the 3kg medicine ball over a height of 5m.

In the under-11 girls weight for distance event the two Blue Star competitors dominated the event with both Louise Stanley and Katie Turnbull throwing 13m, with Louise winning the gold on countback. Louise had earlier won silver in the highland steps event with a score of 75.

Tom Watson was another double medal winner, firstly winning the under-11 boys weight for distance event with a throw of 11.25m and then taking the silver medal in the caber toss with a score of 27.

In the under-13 boys weight for distance event, Jordan Levey picked up the silver medal with a throw of 13.25m

In the standing triple jump, Ella Hannyngton leapt 5.47m for second place in the under-11 girls event and in the under-13 boys standing long jump, Josh Barnett also took a silver medal with a leap of 2.05m

Head coach Keith May said: “This was a good performance from the club’s youngsters with many of them showing great promise for the future. “The team thoroughly enjoyed their experience of competing in such a wonderful venue and now look forward to the local Sussex Sportshall league events.
