Bowmen aim high - and reach the target

Chichester have shot in three rounds this year, winning against Friar’s Gate, Plumpton and finally Bognor to hold on to the crown.

The Albion League consists of four divisions including clubs from across Sussex. The tournament allows archers shooting compound, recurve and barebow to compete alongside one another.

Compound archers’ scores are adjusted down by 100 points and barebow scores increased by 180 to allow the disciplines to compete on an equal level. The best four scores from each team make up the end score for the club.

The successful team in the final match, which saw 49 archers competing, were Stuart Champion, Ross Carr and David Wakeford shooting compound bows and Steve Thomson, who shot recurve. Chichester won by a total of 3,335 points to Bognor’s 3,051.

The outdoor archery season is drawing to a close but plans are already under way for 2015. Archery is seeing a huge increase in popularity following the Olympics and the Hunger Games films and the club have seen a big jump in members this year.
