Men’s vice captain Des Foord made it through to five finals and so some had to be brought forward to Saturday when Newick Bowling Club held their annual championships over the holiday weekend.

But even those plans were partly scuppered by the wet weather and so he ended up playing a couple on Bank Holiday Monday.

Foord won the men’s 2-woods and in partnership with Maurice Awcock also lifted the men’s pairs, which turned out to be one of the most exciting finishes of the entire weekend.

In that they were up against Howard Ainsley and Peter Carter, whom they led by seven shots after the 18th end. But with some excellent drawing by Carter, the last end started with only one shot separating them. However, Carter could not get around the barricade erected by Ainsley and Foord to protect their jack-high shot.
