Letter: Fascinated by Crawley’s wartime history

I have found your recent articles about the First World War and the people from Crawley who took part to be fascinating.

I grew up in Coventry during the second war and remember being very scared by the sound of bombs falling.

I was evacuated to Wiltshire and stayed with a family including a woman who lost two brothers in the first war.

She told me that her parents never really recovered from the loss of their boys and that she spent all day waiting for bad news about her own husband who was fighting in Europe.

I can only imagine how a tiny place like Crawley must have suffered as news was sent home about the brave men who had been killed. Thank you for the very interesting articles.
