Youngsters enjoy adventure of Ferring summer bug hunt

The hunt, led by members Tricia Hall and Peter Dale, guided participants around a variety of habitats where they caught and identified various species.

David Bettiss, the group chairman, said: “There was no doubt that the children present thoroughly enjoyed themselves in their little adventure into the countryside, finding creatures that they normally would have no idea about. It was very rewarding to see the joy on their faces when they came across the various bugs, and they were very careful to release them back to the point where they had been found.”

Crickets and Grasshoppers were the first to be found, closely followed by hover-flies, a speckled wood butterfly and a variety of bees.

In the aquatic conditions of the lagoons and the river, water boatmen, freshwater shrimps, water slaters, flatworms and ramshorn snails were found.

In the air, a kestrel, hunting above the riverbank, and a group of Little Egrets were spotted.
