Worthing students reach regional Young Enterprise final

Young Enterprise students from Davison High School have won Sussex Best Company at a county awards ceremony.

The Worthing students, Lydia Yallop, Molly Tavender, Jun Jun Dixon, Natalie Hunt, Elspeth Sharkey, Emily Saunders and Tabitha Lennox, will now represent the county at the Young Enterprise Company Programme south east regional final on June 15.

Their company, Charm2Chain, sold charm bracelets and necklaces to beat off stiff competition from seven other teams in the county final.

Runner-up Aura from Imberhorne Schol, East Grinstead, will also compete in the regional final.

Madeleine Mills, Young Enterprise manager, said: “We had some great companies started up by students in the Sussex area this year and the judges were incredibly impressed with the products and services they had developed and the presentations they gave at the awards.

“The awards highlighted how the Young Enterprise Company Programme can inspire young people to become the entrepreneurs of tomorrow and help them develop practical business skills while they are still at school.”

Guest speaker John Young, from John Young Media, said: “I was delighted to find myself among so many inspiring young people, with, I am quite sure, more oomph and get up and go than I had at that age.

“It was great to be able to share my thoughts on business success, stepping out of the comfort zone being one of them, and to see two pupils doing precisely that by reading off my portable autocue in front of over 150 guests.”

The programme, supported by HSBC, is aimed at students aged 15 to 19, who set up and run businesses for an academic year, guided by mentors at their school.

Lydia took a lead role as managing director, Molly worked out the costs and pricing structure as finance director, Jun Jun was in charge of production as operations director, Natalie kept everyone happy as human resource manager, Elspeth was in charge of promotion as marking director, Emily ensured customer satisfaction as quality control manager and Tabitha created the website as IT director and company secretary.
