Worthing recommended by PCT for major general hospital

WORTHING looks set to have the major general hospital in the county, leaving campaigners for St Richard's Hospital in Chichester devastated.

The recommendation, from West Sussex Primary Care Trust (PCT), was announced on Wednesday morning.

Abigail Rowe, St Richard's campaign co-ordinator, branded the decision 'absolutely ludicrous' and said they were looking at a judicial review.

"We are going to miss consultant-led maternity services, inpatient paediatrics and, whether you like it or not, a downgraded A&E that will be a glorified minor injuries unit."

Speaking about the impact on rural areas and access, she added: "I wouldn't be surprised that when they start putting the changes into effect that you get deaths on the road."

Meanwhile, Kwash chairman Tom Wye said there was no triumphalism on his part or that of Kwash.

Although he was delighted for Worthing, he said Kwash commiserated with Chichester and 'felt desperately for them'.

PCT chief executive John Wilderspin said: "Worthing provides access for the greatest number of people, including those areas with the poorest health outcomes and the highest levels of deprivation."

The recommendation will go to the PCT board next Wednesday, June 4, for the final decision.
