NewRiver Retail, leaseholders of The Martlets Shopping Centre in Burgess Hill, have put forward proposals for a 10-screen Cineworld cinema, 63-bed Travelodge hotel, new library, extra shops and 142 new homes.

The plans include the provision of 283 extra parking spaces, but members of Burgess Hill Town Council - although in favour of the plans overall -say that’s not enough.

They also say the proposals do not include any public loos, design of the new cinema is ‘stark’, pavement improvements are needed and the site of the new library on the periphery of the development should be made ‘more accessible.’

Their views are now to be put before Mid Sussex District Council before it makes a decision on the proposals.

The town council says it wants increased parking spaces to be considered and/or public transport improvements.
