Work starts on signs for Riverside Walk

Major improvements to the town’s Riverside Walk are underway as part of a project by Horsham Town Community Partnership (HTCP).

The 12.5 mile circular walk follows the River Arun and other water courses around the town and links major green spaces such as Warnham Nature Reserve, Chesworth Farm, Leechpool and Owlbeech Woods.

Along the route, newly designed signs with an easily recognisable logo are being installed to make it easier to follow, and six descriptive illustrated panels will give ideas of what to look for.

Comfortable seats have been placed at ten locations and many have access alongside for wheelchairs and buggies. An equal number of simple benches, handy for a sit-down, will be placed in other positions during the next few weeks.

Jane Apostolou, chair of the HTCP, said: “Funding for this phase of the project came from a £37,000 grant from Biffa Award with Horsham District Council providing a further ten per cent funding.

“Plans have been made for another phase to improve the walking surface of the path at points where walking can be difficult. The improvements will at the same time still maintain the rural aspect of the Walk. Grant applications for this part of this project are underway.

“A new information leaflet showing the route of the Walk and points of interest along the way is currently being produced.”

The group are planning a celebration walk of the route on July 26 as part of a special mid-summer healthy walk.

While there are already several volunteer groups maintaining areas that part of the walk passes through, the project is keen to hear from anyone who would like to help.
