Woman's home badly damaged by fire

Two Horsham fire crews were called to the semi-detached house in Arboretum Bailing Hill, Broadbridge Heath Road, Warnham, at 7.24am on Thursday (January 14).

Watch Commander Steve Blackaby said extensive damage was caused and a female resident escaped unhurt.

He said: “We were met by the occupier who informed us that she had a fire in the house.

“She was notified of the fire as a result of smoke alarms being fitted to the house which we use as a general reminder to make sure that smoke alarms are working.

“The woman is safe - her swift actions allowed her to get out of the house.”

Four firefighters in breathing gear used a high pressure hose reel and a CO2 extinguisher to put out the fire.

A spokesman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said it started by accident and was contained in a room measuring 15m by 6m.

Firefighters carried out salvage work after the house was ‘25 per cent’ damaged by fire and ‘50 per cent’ from heat and smoke.

A hose jet, extraction fan and thermal imaging camera were also used.

Firefighters were in attendance until 10.20am. One of the crews left at 9.12am.
