‘Let’s do lunch’ is the saying that we all associate with the non-stop working environment. Most of us have to watch our pennies and stick to homemade sandwiches, but every now and then it’s nice to hear those three words and get away from the office for an afternoon treat.
Whether it’s a nice catch up with a colleague or you’re trying to impress a potential client, Horsham has an abundance of eateries to choose from so you can create the perfect setting to relax and make those all important negotiations.
The Black Jug in North Street for instance is smack-bang in the town’s commercial district, with the county council and Park North in walking distance.
If you’re looking to impress someone this is the place to go. A nice relaxed pub/restaurant atmosphere that’s not pretentious, but not shabby either.
Decor: Referenced as far back as the early Victorian period, the pub’s interior is charming, featuring old bookcases crammed with literature, antique-looking wood furnishings and other little hints of history scattered about.
Today, however, we decided to pull up a seat in the rear courtyard for a breath of fresh air.
Outside, under a small shelter, we sat back and admired the trellises on the walls, the old-fashioned water pump and a large clay pot that reminded me of the wicker baskets you see being carried around by snake charmers.
Service: We were greeted by a lady who was happy to engage in a bit of banter. She brought us over a menu with a skip in her step and asked what we’d like to drink.
As other customers nattered with an afternoon tipple, you could see the staff hard at work, making sure everyone was comfortable.
Drink: The usual tea, cappuccino and espresso were on offer, but if it’s a standard coffee you’re looking for, opt for the Cafetière, which is £2.60 per person.
Strong with a little milk on the side - I was missing that earthy, bean-grounded taste I like, but all-in-all a nice brew.
A unique touch was the cube of fudge that comes with it. Very sweet, it melted in my mouth and really complemented the drink.
Food: This is where I could really indulge.
The menu is brimming with appetising light bites, meals and sandwiches - there’s something here for everyone.
My colleague and I ordered the steamed asparagus with poached egg and hollandaise sauce.
I cannot recommend this enough. Crunchy, thick asparagus with a delicious rich sauce, we asked for bread just to mop up the last remnants.
Value for money: The bill came to £19.30 for the two of us, but you do get your money’s worth.
