The temperature is also set to drop a few degrees.

New year’s Day is set for some sunny spells but the forecast for the weekend is plenty of showers, some heavy and a return to more seasonal temperatures, especially at night.

The Met Office says that the first week of New Year is likely to be unsettled in the south-east of the country, with spells of wet weather, and some snow possible over the higher ground of the north.

This may be accompanied by strong or gale force winds, with a low risk of severe gales.

The wet conditions are likely to be mixed with some brighter, showery interludes and also some brief drier spells.

As we move into the second week of January there are signs of an east to west split developing, with mild, wet weather in the west and colder drier weather in the east.

Temperatures are generally expected to remain around or just above normal for most, but slightly below at times with some night frosts possible in the settled, drier spells.

The middle part of the month is expected to remain unsettled, with wet and windy weather mainly in the north and west, drier in the south and east with a higher likelihood of more settled conditions.

The north-west to south-east split in the weather is then expected to persist through the remainder of the month, with rainfall around average across most of the country.

Temperatures should be generally mild, but closer to average in the north, where there is a risk of snow.

Drier, clearer conditions especially in the east could give way to the odd frosty night, although there is a low chance of any prolonged cold spells.
