The event meant Adur Festival could genuinely end with a bang, as a cannon was fired on Sunday to mark its closure.

Friends of Shoreham Fort secretary Sharon Penfold said: “It went very well, it was really busy. Everybody had a smile on their faces, which is the main thing, because it is a community event.

“The bad weather forecast on Saturday may have affected the turnout that day but by the end of it, we had sold out all of the ice creams and we had to get more in for Sunday.”

The Sussex Army Cadet Force’s Kitkar Display Team, making its first visit to Shoreham Fort, proved popular.

Mrs Penfold said: “They were absolutely brilliant. They really picked up the tempo.”

The West Sussex Irregulars created a Second World War hospital ward in the fort’s Nissen hut. It replicated the RAF Burns Unit, run by plastic surgeon Archibald McIndoe, at the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead.

Scouts and Sea Scouts helped with bucket collections on Sunday.
